BSNL has begun disconnecting broadband services for consumers in the Hills who have not been paying their bills as part of GJM’s campaign for Gorkhaland. Broadband services have been down in Darjeeling and Kalimpong since the last two days.
GJM, on its part, has said that it would take “strong action” if the government resorts to arm-twisting tactics to derail their ongoing movement. “We know that disconnecting broadband lines in the Hills is a tactic to derail our movement. But we will not lie back, and will take strong measures,” said Harka Bahadur Chhetri, the GJM press and publicity secretary.
“I cannot do anything to reconnect broadband connections unless pending bills are cleared,” said S K Samanta, GM, BSNL, over phone from Siliguri
Along with non-payment for telephone services, GJM had also asked Hills people not to pay their electricity bills from April last year.
